We have had a great first week of mClass assessments! I am so proud of the concentration and determination all of our students have shown this week! Thank you for your help at home by reading, getting them to bed on time, and building their confidence! It has been a joy to see their success!
Our rising 5th graders are currently selling Mrs. Pumpkins Chicken Pies, Spaghetti, and Brownies to raise money for their Washington DC field trip next October! They are delicious, are a quick and easy way to get dinner on the table on a busy night, and are sold at a really good price. Please seek out one of our 4th graders if you would like some yummy food that will also support their trip!
Current 5th graders, cheerleading tryouts at SESMS are coming up! Anyone interested should ask Ms. Carter or Mr. Marshall for a tryout packet and sign-up in the front office so we can be sure to let SESMS know who is going to be at tryouts!

Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
This past week was an exciting and fun week! We had Camp London, travelled to NC State, and got pepped up for our end-of-year assessments with pep rallies and t-shirts! It was a great way to get back into our school and prepared to work through the end of the year!
As we move forward, we seek your help to keep your children focused and positive through our testing season. There are some dates for you to, forget the pencil, use a Sharpie, write on your calendar!
We don’t base all that we do on our standardized tests, but at this point in the year it is time to really buckle down, study hard, and show these tests who’s boss! Like we cheered this Friday, we are London Lions, we will do our best, and rock these tests!!
To get us excited for our opening testing day next Monday, we want everyone in the whole entire school, students and staff included, to wear their #lionslookingforward shirts THIS FRIDAY! We look forward to showing what we know on our tests how our knowledge leads to success in the future!
One last reminder, we will have our last Lion PAC parent meeting of the year TOMORROW evening at 6:00pm in the Lion’s Den. We will be planning Teacher Appreciation Week events/gifts and will also plan for the Awards Day reception. Please join us if you have time!
If you don’t already, please follow us on Facebook or Twitter to stay up-to-date on the happenings around the school - especially as we near the end of the year and more events are happening!

Our Battle of the Books team will compete against the South District elementary schools this Wednesday! They have worked very hard under the coaching of Ms. Wilkinson and Ms. Cornett all year and are ready to show their stuff to the rest of the schools! Please wish them luck and, to everyone, “Keep Calm and Read On!”
Also this week are Spring pictures! Spring pictures will be taken this Thursday morning! Only students who bring in money will get their pictures taken. So please, look through your order form and send it in if you want your child to get Spring pictures!
Spring Break will begin this Friday at 2:30pm! School will be closed through the whole entire week next week, the 10-th-14th, and students will return on Tuesday, April 18th.
Last for this week, yesterday started a new month and with a new month comes a new Lion Value! We started the year off meeting a new friend, NED, and we are going to end the year going back over the values he taught us! This April we will be focusing on “Never Give Up” or Perseverance. Perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty, As we head into the last months of school it becomes more difficult to focus on school work and behave as we know we should. I urge all of us to persevere despite the pull to do otherwise. Let’s stay focused, Never Give Up, and persevere in April!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Sunday, March 19th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
We have a big week ahead here at London Elementary so please listen closely!
First, all of our 3rd-5th graders will be taking Mock EOG tests Monday-Wednesday. These tests will give us a good reading of where we stand and what we need to do to prepare for our real EOG’s that will take place at the end of May and beginning of June. What I need from all of our upperclassmen is to get good nights of sleep, eat a good breakfast, and try your best on all of your tests! Tests will run in the morning from 8:30 to approximately 11ish, so please be on time! Parents, we thank you for your help in encouraging and preparing your children for these tests every day this week!
This Friday we will be hosting our second Fabulous Friday event! The cost will again be $5 and any student staying after must prepay and turn in their permission slip form by Wednesday. If you need another form, please have your child pick one up in the main office. We have over 60 students already confirmed to be there and would love to see the whole entire school come if you can! The event, which is put on by our parent group, the Lion PAC, will run from 2:30-5:30pm and will consist of stations for the students to go through such as arts-and-crafts (that will also be a service project for Walnut Cove Assisted Living), a dance room, gym, computers, and snack! We even have students from South Stokes High school coming down to enjoy the fun! So, get those permission forms sent back by Wednesday along with your $5, and get ready to have fun THIS Friday at Fabulous Friday!
Also this week we will be having Kindergarten Registration on Wednesday from 8:30-11:30am. Please let anyone and everyone you know in our district who has a child of kindergarten age to call in and set up an appointment. We look forward to meeting our newest little Lions, so help us spread the word!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Sunday, March 12th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our chocolate sale! It was a complete success and raised twice as much as what our goal was set for! We will put this profit towards classroom needs, but a huge portion of it will go towards our track fund for building a track on our playground!
Next Friday, March 24th we will be hosting our second Fabulous Friday event! The cost will again be $5 and any student staying after must prepay and turn in their permission slip form that will be coming home this week. We had a great time last time and hope to have even more students join us next Friday! The event, which is put on by our parent group, the Lion PAC, will run from 2:30-5:30pm and will consist of stations for the students to go through such as arts-and-crafts, dance, gym, computers, and snack! We even have students from South Stokes High school coming down to enjoy the fun! So, look for your permission slip to come home this week, send it back with $5, and get ready to have fun next Friday at Fabulous Friday!

Sunday, February 26th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
This Thursday we kicked off our Spring sale and I cannot believe the success we have had this far! We are selling Signature chocolate bars and they are delicious! What we are most excited about is the opportunity to also donate to the school instead of just sell chocolate! The prizes are great too!
As this is starting up, Jump Rope for the Heart is ending!! It will end THIS Friday so make sure to get all of your donations for the American Heart Association in by Friday!
In two weeks we will be joining the county in a second chance breakfast initiative! For those students arriving between 7:40am and 7:50am, there will be a bagged breakfast option to get them through the line and out to the classrooms quicker. There will be more classroom friendly foods in these bags than in the main breakfast line so students can eat without creating too much of a mess. The line will still shut down at 7:50am as that is when all students are expected to be in the room at that time. As a school system we are looking at ways to help our community eat good healthy breakfasts so we will try this and see how it works!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Sunday, February 19th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
Thank you to all who came to enjoy the Dome Theater on Friday! It was a great experience and having parents, grandparents, and siblings here to enjoy it made it that much better! We appreciate the community spirit and the ability to extend our science education outside of the classroom!
Tomorrow and Tuesday WILL be full student days. These are make-up days from our snow back in January. So please plan on having your child at school the whole entire week for full days this week!
This Thursday will be class picture day! Please look for fliers to come home tomorrow with more information on purchasing these memories!
Also this Thursday we will be kicking off our Spring sale. This year we will be selling chocolate bars! They are Signature brand, are .2 ounces bigger than World’s Finest, and are delicious! What we are most excited about is the opportunity to also donate to the school instead of just sell chocolate! The prizes are great too! For selling one box, or donating $30, your child gets neon London sunglasses. For selling two boxes or donating $60, your child will get a London water bottle to continue in our work to hydrate throughout the day in the classrooms! And last, for selling three boxes or donating $90 directly to the school your child will earn a spot on a field trip to NC State University where SSHS grads will take our students to see the fabulous Hunt Library, the recreation center, classroom buildings, and out to eat at one of the schoool’s cafeterias! We are trying to provide opportunities for our students to start thinking ahead at all of the opportunities they have beyond high school and this will be our first exciting opportunity for that! The proceeds will go to school improvements including adding to our Track Fund! Thank you in advance for your help with making our Spring Fundraiser a success!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

The Dome Theatre will be coming to our school THIS Friday from 8:15am-2:15pm! This is a planetarium-type visual/audio experience that will be catered to each grade’s science curriculum. Parents are encouraged to attend! You should have received a flier this past Wednesday with class specific times to see the event. Please send this back if you will be coming so we can prepare for how many parents will be attending with us.
Thank you to our Lion PAC Parents for a great meeting this past week! The biggest thing we got planned was our next Fabulous Friday which will be Friday, March 24th from 2:30-5:30pm! I know the students have been eager to hear this date, so mark it down and get ready to have a great time! We will even have SSHS students here to help make the event even better! More information and permission slips will be coming home closer to the event!
Two weeks ago, surveys were posted on our school’s Facebook and Twitter pages about your child’s teacher and principal. We are interested in your feedback so we can work to provide the best atmosphere and learning environment for our students. If you would, take a few minutes to fill out these surveys. Your responses are annonymous unless you provide your information and I am the only one who will see the raw data. This data will be used to coach teachers and for my own self-reflection as we work throughout Spring semester. These are now posted on the school’s webpage as well as on Facebook and Twitter and will be up for the rest of this week only. Thank you for your help in making the school what our students need!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

This month we are focusing on using Self-Discipline! Last week we worked on starting something that will help us improve our lives. This week, I encourage us all to stop something that is detrimental to our own success. Do you need to stop staying up late, stop overeating, stop biting your nails, stop talking out in class, stop bothering your friends in class? What can you use your Self-Discipline to stop doing this week to make you as successful as you can possibly be?
I hope you all enjoy your Super Bowl festivities and we will see you all bright eyed and ready to learn tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
First tonight, I want to thank all of the whole entire staff at London for working so hard the last two weeks to get all mClass testing completed! Through their teamwork from the classroom to specials to the lunchroom and beyond, except for students who were absent, our mClass MOY assessments are complete and we will be getting back to good, solid daily instruction this week! A thank you also goes out to our students who worked very hard to show what they knew. We have had so much growth from the beginning of the year it is unbelievable! Thank you, families for working with us to make this happen!
This week all grades will be working on MOY math assessments. K-2 will be working on a few problems daily. Our 3rd-5th graders will be completing MOY math assessments on Tuesday and our 3rd graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities test Wednesday-Friday. Parents, please make sure your children are getting sleep, breakfast, and take these assessments seriously so that we, again, can use the information to best meet the educational needs of each child.
Report Cards will go home next Tuesday, January 31st.
This Friday was Ms. Hough’s last day as a guidance counselor for us. She has accepted a job with West Stokes High School and we wish her well. We have officially hired Mr. David Walker as our new guidance counselor. He has come and met all of the students and I believe he will be a tremendous asset to our school as we move forward. Mr. Walker with start with us in two weeks and Ms. Tedder will be filling in until then to continue our Character Education program without a hitch.
Lastly, mark your calendars as the Dome Theatre will be coming to our school on Friday, February 17th from 8:30am-2:30pm! Monday, January 16th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
Most important tonight, we WILL have school tomorrow for all students and staff. Due to the snow days last week, the Board approved us making up the day tomorrow instead of taking from our Spring break or adding to the end of the school year! So again, we WILL be having a regular school day for all students and staff tomorrow!
Also, as we return to classes, the mClass Middle of Year assessments will continue. The quicker assessments are complete and the hefty reading and writing assessments that place your child at a reading level are upon us. Please work with us as we work through these assessments. Full nights of sleep, eating breakfast, and taking the assessments seriously will go far in ensuring we accurately place your children in reading groups for this next portion of the year. Correct placement allows us to provide the best instruction for your child for what they need. We hope to be done with the majority of mClass assessments by the end of the school day THIS Friday. Thank you for your help!
Due to the snow days, our semester has also been extended to this Friday with report cards now being sent home on Tuesday, January 31st.
I want to leave you tonight with two quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. to remember as we go through this week.
“The time is always right to do what is right” and “Life’s most persistent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’ ” Take time this week to utilize your Lion Value of patience this week as you do what is right for others!
I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend. and we look forward to seeing you for another great week at London Elementary starting tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Monday, January 2nd:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your first Lion Update of 2017! I hope this call finds you and yours doing well at this, the conclusion of our winter break!
As we return to classes, the mClass Middle of Year assessment window opens. We know that students need a chance to get back into the swing of things, so our whole entire staff has been instructed to ease into the testing with the quicker assessments and to wait until next week to start the hefty reading and writing assessments that place your child at a reading level. Please work with us as we work through these assessments. Full nights of sleep, eating breakfast, and taking the assessments seriously will go far in ensuring we accurately place your children in reading groups for this next portion of the year. Correct placement allows us to provide the best instruction for your child for what they need. We hope to be done with the majority of mClass assessments by Friday, January 13th. Thank you for your help!
Looking forward, we will not have school on Monday, January 16th or Tuesday, January 17th, so please make childcare plans accordingly.
With a new year brings a new month and a new Lion Value. This month we want to focus on patience. The hustle and bustle of the last month has taken a toll on all of our patience. We want to take this month to refocus on this value - understanding that good learning comes from the patience of listening while your teacher teaches the lessons - that good food in the cafeteria comes from the patience of waiting for the meal to be prepared and served to to - that a good ride down the slide comes from the patience of waiting for your friend to finish riding the slide first - that good grades come from the patience to work through difficult material and never giving up! Let’s work on our patience together this month because great things come when you use patience!
I hope you all had a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing you for another great week at London Elementary starting tomorrow morning, on time, at 7:40am!
Sunday, December 18th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
What an AMAZING Fabulous Friday event we had to kick off our last week of school! 120 out of our 240 students were there and had a BLAST! Thank you to our Lion PAC for planning and running the event! Look for more fun events like this to take place this spring!
This week we have several events planned that include:
*The Winston Salem Symphony playing for us Monday morning.
*On Tuesday, Mr. Kent Reichart will be interpreting “The Night Before Christmas” from three different perspectives (our favorite from last year was a pirate!). Classes will then be talking about similarities and differences between the formats. To help us get comfy for our stories, it will be Pajama Day for the whole entire school!! So, get out your favorite PJ’s and come on to school as comfy as you can!
*Wednesday we will celebrate Ugly Sweater Day across the school! Help your child celebrate this day, by picking out the most unique sweater in their closet or even make one yourself like Mrs. Mitchell did last year!
Wednesday is also an early dismissal day! We will dismiss at 11:00am, so please make sure to make arrangements for that.
We hope that everyone has a most wonderful winter break with their families and friends. Rest, relax, and enjoy the time you have!
We love your children and wish them the happiest of holidays and we look forward to seeing them all back in the new year at London Elementary starting at 7:40am on Tuesday, Janurary 3rd!

Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
Tomorrow will be our Winter Concert for all of our K-5th grade classes! Please have your child here by 5:40pm so we can get lined up and ready to start the show at 6:00pm! We hope you all can come to see the hard work our London students have done to prepare for the show!
THIS Friday our Lion PAC is hosting a special event! Fabulous Friday will run from after school until 6:00pm. We will provide a pizza and drink after school snack and run different stations for your child to participate in that include: gym, computers, take home arts-and-crafts, a dance room, and a science lab! If your child would like to attend, they MUST have pay their $5 and turn in their permission slip by Thursday afternoon. We will only allow students who have paid and turned in their slips to stay. So, take the afternoon to get last minute shopping done and let your kids enjoy Fabulous Friday here sponsored by the Lion PAC!
As we are approaching the middle of the school year, please remember that we need to value all of the time your child is here at school. Tardies are becoming an increasing issue as are students getting signed out early. In addition, we ask that if you are changing your child’s afternoon transportation that you do so prior to 2:00pm. At 2:00, Ms. Labuda sends a ride change email to all teachers. If you call past this time it creates a disturbance for the classrooms as well as a chance that we will not get it changed due to the busy-ness that occurs during the afternoon dismissal time. Thank you for helping us work on making the whole entire school day meaningful and impactful for all students.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you for another great week at London Elementary starting tomorrow morning, on time, at 7:40am!
Sunday, December 4th:

Our meetings are short, sweet, and fun and will make a huge impact on the heart of our school as we get plan and implement more fun events for our community!
Our Lion Value for December is Kindness and I urge us all to remember this as our lives get more hectic through this season. As we go through this week, let’s all remember this quote from Martin Kornfeld: “If we all do one random act of kindness daily, we just might set the world in the right direction.”
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you for another great week at London Elementary starting tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

This year, our Lion PAC will be hosting a Fabulous Friday event on Friday, December 16th. This event will run from 3:00-6:00pm. Students attending the event will remain at school to participate in activities such as science, computers, dance, arts and crafts, and gym. A pizza meal will be provided as well. The cost of this event will be $5 per student and a permission slip with agreement to pick up your child at 6:00pm will be coming home soon! Please, have a designated adult stop by the school anytime between 2:30pm and 6:00pm to pick up your items. This year, our School Improvement Team has embarked on a reflective journey to help implement focused, goal-oriented plans for the growth of our school. Tomorrow our School Improvement Team will be looking over the 6 goals and their accompanying plans and parents and other stakeholders are welcome to come to hear the discussion. The meeting will take place at 2:45 in the White Computer Lab.
We appreciate all who came to meet with us last week for parent teacher conferences. Our students are all working hard to grow and learn and it is with a group effort between home and school that will best support them in their educational journey! Thank you for working with us to make your child the best they can be!
I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Monday, November 7th:

I hope you all had a wonderful Monday and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Sunday, October 30th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
Last week was a great week for our students at London Elementary as PreK-4 celebrated Halloween on Friday with celebrations, pumpkin decorating, and our annual parade and 5th grade went on their Washington DC Trip! You can check out memories from both of these events on our Facebook page as well as our school page! We will also be announcing our students of the month for October, so check out pictures of these students on our pages to honor them and their value of Carefulness!
Our parent group, the Lion PAC, will be meeting next Monday, November 7th at 6:00pm! We had a lot of new faces at our last meeting and are excited to plan two events for December. Are you looking for a way to connect? Would you be interested in planning events for our community? Come join us NEXT Monday, November 7th at 6:00pm in the Lion’s Den!

Sunday, October 23rd:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
This week we will be celebrating Socktober!! Kid President is one of our friends from Ms. Hough’s classroom and he is attempting to have students throughout the United States collect 1million pairs of socks because socks are the least donated item to homeless and outreach shelters. So, for next week only, we will be collecting new, unused pairs of socks to donate to East Stokes Outreach! Bring in your new, unsed socks starting Monday and place them in the “Socktober” box by the Lion’s Den and let’s see how many pairs we can collect by Friday!
Speaking of Friday, this Friday will be our Halloween celebrations! Students may wear costumes to school on Friday, October 28th, but masks are not allowed until we do our parade of costumes. The parade of costumes will start at approximately 1:30pm and will travel around the school ending in the gym. Parents are welcome to come to the gym to view the parade of costumes! We should be circulating the gym around 1:40pm. Students may be signed out by a parent after the parade in the child’s classroom.
Next weekend is the last weekend to sign up for Walnut Cove Youth Basketball Leagues! Check your child’s backpack tomorrow night for a slip with more information on times and dates! We hope you can join us for this great league!
As the weather is getting colder, make sure to dress your child appropriately for the day. We are now in a time where coats are a must in the morning, but are not needed by the afternoon, so layering is a great option. In addition, if you have extra coats lying around the house from last year that no longer fit, we will be glad to take them, wash them, and add them to our clothes closet to help those in our school who do not have the resources to purchase a new coat. We appreciate all the help we get from our London community!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Sunday, October 16th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
Many parents and grandparents have come in to enjoy lunch with their children this year. We want to encourage you to do so if you are able, however and food brought in from restaurants must be in an unlabeled container or transferred onto a paper plate in the front office. We do not want to discourage anyone from coming to eat with their child, but do risk getting a significant fine of up to $10,000 if food from other establishments is found in the cafeteria. Thank you for helping us in the endeavor!

Sunday, October 2nd:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
First and foremost, please remember that THIS Friday is a Teacher Workday. No students will be reporting to school on Friday. Please make your childcare plans now so your children are safe and well taken care of while our teachers spend the day planning and preparing for the next month of school.
Second, our school kicked off our Fall Fundraiser Friday afternoon. If all goes as planned, this will be our LAST CATALOG SALE during my tenure as principal, but we need to make it count! We are going to utilize these funds to repair and/or replace our blue slide and start saving for our new project… a track to go around our whole entire playground/field area! Please help us by selling to your friends and family. I went with the best catalogs I could find that would provide good quality items for all interests so think about holiday gifts and birthday presents too! In addition, I went with prizes your children would enjoy (and wont’ break within the first day of having them)! Read in your packets to find out more details and ask your child’s teacher if you have any questions! Thank you in advance for making this a great sale!
Any parents interested in participating in our Lion PAC, Parental Advisory Committee, come on out to our first meeting TOMORROW night at 6:00pm. We will be meeting in the Lion’s Den and hope to start planning for a fall event or two as well as arrange details concerning our BackPack Buddies program. This group is great fun to be a part of and I actually look forward to the meetings! All parents have a gift to give and participation is based on the time and energy you have to give! We have a different leader for each event we put on and you can participate in one, two or all events by volunteering, donating, or just supporting the endeavor! If you think you would be interested in helping us plan fun events for the London community, please join us tomorrow evening at 6:00pm!
Last for the evening, I would like to congratulate our students of the month for September! These were the students in each class that showed the most self-control. They were announced Friday afternoon to the school and will be announced individually for the next 12 days on our Facebook and Twitter pages! As we move into October, we will be focusing on the Value: Carefulness. We are going to work on being careful with our behaviors - being mindful of our actions, speech, and the rights of other. We will also work on being careful in our classwork - being exact, thorough, and perfoming our assignments with accuracy. Please work on being careful this month in your homes as we work at school to grow in our Lion Value of Carefulness!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Sunday, September 18th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
THIS Friday is our London Color Run!! The Color Run will start at 6:30pm. Pre-registrations are being taken up in classrooms daily. $20 registrations include a commemorative t-shirt! This year we also have $15 registrations that do not include a t-shirt. The shirt is the exact same design as last year. Registration also include a water, banana, and popsicle! In addition, participants can purchase bags of color for $1 to throw at our teachers during the Teacher Tunnel Run! This is looking to be a great time, so come on out THIS Friday at 6:30pm for the London Color Run!
Thank you to all of our car riders for making it here on time in the mornings! We have only had a handful of tardies so far this year. Keep it up!
This year our secretary, Ms. Labuda, sends out an afternoon ride change email at 2:00pm. If you have a ride change, please make sure you contact the school BEFORE 2:00pm or it gets too difficult to ensure these requests are fulfilled.
In addition, there have been numerous instances of students being signed out after 2:00pm. Although we understand sometimes things come up, it is apparent that many are trying to skip carline. As we move forward in the year, please do not come in the office to sign your child out after 2:00pm. We will kindly ask you to go to carline to pick your child unless a true valid reason is presented.
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Wednesday, September 7th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with a quick reminder that TOMORROW NIGHT we will have Math Madness Curriculum Night! Come to the gym at 6:30pm to hear about some exciting changes to this year (some of which you may have already noticed with homework and recess) as well as some Title I information. Then, head to your child’s classroom with your child to play math games and pick up games you can play at home together to learn math facts! K-3 students will even get a deck of playing cards to take home to play their math games with! This is going to be a quick, but fun event and we hope to see you all there to play, learn, and take the math fun home with you!
Then, don’t forget to bring your order forms and get your smiles ready for Picture Day on Friday!
I hope you all have a great evening and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Monday, September 5th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update! Thank you for a great first week back to school! I am impressed at how hard all of our students are already working and the wonderful behaviors I am seeing in the hallways and around the school as well as work on our Lion Value of self-control. Keep it up!
This Thursday we will be hosting a Math Madness Curriculum Night! We hope all of our families will be able to come and learn about some exciting changes to this year from 6:30-6:45pm in the gym with me and then go to the classrooms to learn fun games to play to help learn, memorize, and improve your child’s math facts until 7:30pm. This will be a short, fun event so we hope to see you all on Thursday at 6:30pm!
Picture Day will be THIS Friday! You should have received Picture Day Order Forms in your child’s backpack on Friday. Please send these in with your child to get their picture taken THIS Friday. All students will get their picture taken for the yearbook regardless of if they are ordering pictures, so bring your best smiles THIS Friday!
The last day for Yo-Yo Sales will be tomorrow! Any student still wishing to purchase a yo-yo should bring their money to lunch tomorrow to purchase their yo-yo.
Also at lunch tomorrow we will be celebrating the amazing schoolwide participation in bringing in Free and Reduced Lunch forms last week! I hope over the weekend our Icee Pops had enough time to freeze because I will be treating every student to these treats tomorrow! I also cannot wait to hear what stories you all made up together as families this weekend on the “Icee Pop Disaster”!! I even made a story up with my kids and it was a lot of fun!
Student Information Sheets need to be turned in as soon as possible as well so Ms. Labuda can ensure all information is correct in PowerSchool and so we have updated paper copies in case of an emergency and we cannot access PowerSchool. Thank you for your help in our work to keep our records as up-to-date as we can.
In the afternoon, please have carline run on the LOWER road behind the school and not the upper road where maintenance parks. This past week, maintenance called to let me know that we were using both the upper and lower roads back behind the school and they were not able to get out. To help us all, make sure you use the LOWER road and then split into two lanes as the road allows near Ms. Wilkinson.
I hope that everyone had a wonderful long weekend and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!
Tuesday, August 30th:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with a midweek Lion Update! Our first two days have been outstanding and I am so impressed with all of our students arriving to school on time and using their best self-control while in every situation at school! Keep it up!
This year we are requesting that ALL students have their parents or guardians fill out a Free and Reduced Lunch Form and send it back by THIS Friday. This enrollment into this program is COMPLETELY confidential to everyone in the school including me. You may even be surprised that you qualify. In addition, the amount of Title I Funds the school receives is based on the total amount of Free and Reduced Lunch students that we serve, so the more that we get qualified the more federal monies we will be allotted to further help your children grow! If you do not wish to fill one out, please write “DECLINE” on the form and send it back. Every student that brings back their Free and Reduced Lunch form filled out or declined will get to enjoy an Icee Pop with Mrs. Mitchell on Friday!
Another form we are looking to have back by this Friday is the Student Information Sheet. All students need to have a new student information sheet filled out yearly. Ms. Labuda goes through each one to ensure all PowerSchool information is updated. Please get these into your child’s teacher as soon as possible.
Last for tonight, I want to remind all parents and students that we are shooting for a 7:40am arrival time - especially if you are eating breakfast here - because we want ALL students IN THEIR CLASSROOMS at 7:50am. Car Line will start unloading at 7:20am and students will report to the cafeteria for the opportunity to eat breakfast. At 7:40am, students not eating or finished eating will be dismissed to go to the classrooms. At 7:45, the whole entire cafeteria will be dismissed. Any breakfasts picked up at 7:45am or later will be taken to the classroom as ALL students are expected to be in their classrooms by 7:50am. ALL breakfast should be eaten and disposed of by 8:00am when Mrs. Mitchell starts announcements. We will stop unloading carline at 7:50am at which time the front doors will be closed and locked. Anyone arriving after the doors have been closed must have an adult walk them into the building and sign in at the office. Thank you for working with us on trying to make sure we are prompt and getting the most out of each and every day we are here together learning!
I hope that everyone has a wonderful evening and we look forward to seeing you all back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

We have had a great first week of mClass assessments! I am so proud of the concentration and determination all of our students have shown this week! Thank you also to all of our teachers for their encouragement and support! For a little snippet of how well they did… we went from having only 56% of our students at grade level in Dibels at the beginning of the year to 72.5% at the end!! Thank you for your help at home by reading, getting them to bed on time, and building their confidence! It has been a joy to see their success!
- We will continue next week with the TRC assessments which are the longer readings with the writing question components. This will take place over the following two weeks while continued review occurs.

- Our students and teachers have worked hard all year and have really been pushing this last week. Sunday, April 23rd:
Good evening! This is Kristi Mitchell, principal of London Elementary School calling with your Lion Update!
This past week was an exciting and fun week! We had Camp London, travelled to NC State, and got pepped up for our end-of-year assessments with pep rallies and t-shirts! It was a great way to get back into our school and prepared to work through the end of the year!
As we move forward, we seek your help to keep your children focused and positive through our testing season. There are some dates for you to, forget the pencil, use a Sharpie, write on your calendar!
- This week we start real, focused studying - please remind your children daily of the need to listen closely to their teachers and work hard on their lessons.
- Our mClass EOY testing window starts on Monday, May 1st. All students K-3 will start testing their Dibels components on this day, with the in depth reading and written questions starting that Thursday and running through May 19th. Please keep reading nightly with your children. Remind them to stay calm and do their best when they get called to do their reading and they will do fine!
- EOY Math tests for K-2 will also start on May 1st and run throughout the month, so please practice math facts and skills and speak positively about this at home.
- Upper grades students, you will test ELA on Thursday, May 25th and Math on Friday, May 26th. Students need to get a good night of sleep, dress comfortably, eat a good breakfast, and never give up! There are 23 classroom days until EOGs and the teachers are fully prepared with lessons and materials to ensure proper preparation and building of confidence with the material. As long as they work and study hard as directed, all students can be successful when these tests come around!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

- For selling one box, or donating $30, your child gets neon London sunglasses.
- For selling two boxes or donating $60, your child will get a London water bottle to continue in our work to hydrate throughout the day in the classrooms!
- And last, for selling three boxes or donating $90 directly to the school your child will earn a spot on a field trip to NC State University where SSHS grads will take our students to see the fabulous Hunt Library, the recreation center, classroom buildings, and out to eat at one of the school’s cafeterias!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you for another great week at London Elementary starting tomorrow morning at 7:40am!

Open House will be this Thursday from 5-7pm. At this time you will be able to find out your child’s teacher, meet them, and see your new classroom. There will be class lists posted by the front office, in the library hallway, and in the cafeteria. Make sure you also go through the cafeteria to meet community organizations such as SSYSA and Girl Scouts, buy last year’s yearbooks and reserve one for this year, learn about and join our parent group, the Lion PAC, check in with your bus driver for stop times, buy some Lion Gear including t-shirts, tumblers, and key rings, and say hello to your principal! Her name is Taylor Furr and tomorrow at 7PM there will be a meeting at the Stokes County Cooperative Extension office in Danbury for folks who are interested in 4-H and learning about how to start a 4-H club. If anyone is interested in attending, they can contact the office at 336-593-8179 or email her directly at [email protected].
And last for tonight, I want to remind you all that we not only have a school webpage for you to check out and weekly Lion Update messages, but we also post regularly on our London Elementary Facebook page and our Twitter, @londonlionsROAR.
